So hands down, the absolute coolest and most nicely finished BYOD rail out there IMO is made by the craftsman over at Archetype Racing @EIGHTLUG .

Unfortunately, that one is out of reach for me at the moment... so I made this one to hold me over until my "Bronco Fund" becomes healthy again.

It's made with a $13 aluminum Picatinny Rail from Amazon, some scrap aluminum angle, and a dollar or so worth of screws.

Basically, I cut the bulk of it out with a hacksaw and used several files to clean up the details. I plan on painting the top where the rail sits black, and the lettering the same color as the dash (so it's a little more subtle).

All in all, it was a fun little project. The material cost was low, but I spent several hours with file in hand.

Lots of meticulous concentration in that piece.
Well done.
Good vision on what you wanted, good skill and patience to make it come to life.
Pretty impressive!

that actually looks really cool...and might be a good reason to invest in a dremel.

@DD214

😄... actually (for about 5 min, 1/2 way through the process) I tried to use my dremel, and nearly ruined the whole thing. For some reason, despite several attempts, I couldn't make a straight line with it at all, and I didn’t have bits small enough to fit in the tight spaces.

Also, I got the Bronco logo directly from the Ford site, printed it out, and glued it on the aluminum angle with a glue stick. The rotation of the dremel ripped the edges of the paper and made the edges harder to define. Filing in one direction cut the paper cleanly away and left a good pattern to follow.

I never tried gluing a pattern to aluminum before, but it worked out really well... with the filing method anyway.
