Better question is Why does anybody like it?

The posters that have posted the "old man yelling at clouds" comments I guess. I'm the furthest thing from an old man yelling at clouds. I love new tech and it's probably why I move on to new vehicles pretty quickly. Auto Stop/Start was not designed with drivers in mind. It was designed to help manufacturers to comply with emissions regulations not aid drivers or enhance the driveability of vehicles and it's something I don't like from a personal perspective as a driver to I choose to disable it. If someone likes it then that's great for them though as I have no reason paint people with broad strokes just because they like or don't like a certain feature.Better question is Why does anybody like it?

Auto start/stop is more about reducing carbon output than MPG gains. Especially when driving in heavy stop and go traffic, the carbon reduction can be great.I've always been uncomfortable with vehicles with Auto Start/Stop. The first time I experienced the "feature" it was somewhat disconcerting having the vehicle stop running at a red light. At first, I fought against it. Although I never fully reprogrammed it out of existence, I'd still generally turn it off each time I'd drive the vehicle. The Bronco version of ASS seems to be a little less aggressive than some of my former vehicles. However, there are still little annoyances such as it turning off the engine as I stop in my driveway, only to immediately turn back on as the transmission is shifted to Park.
But why so much vitriol for a "feature" that is pretty benign. Certain consumers seem to hate this capability. Is it because so many of us from the older generations have been taught that starting/stopping the engine is wasteful or even actually damaging to an engine? Or because we are stubborn and don't like being told what to do by new technology that is often perceived to be imposed on us by the "nanny state"?
Clearly, the new technology and engine tolerances make this capability non-destructive in terms of engine wear and tear. It also, on the whole, leads to some incremental MPG gains.
So why do so many of us still feel angst or discomfort with ASS?
That's simply not true. Auto stop-start systems aren't as potentially damaging as cold starts, though, simply because the engine isn't cold. Not only are the engines at operating temperature before the stop-start system begins to work, the vehicles also use electric water pumps to maintain optimal engine temperature when they're stopped. It greatly diminishes the life of your engine.
i dont even pay attention as my bronco is much smoother then other cars iv been inI've always been uncomfortable with vehicles with Auto Start/Stop. Nailed it. No one was asking for this technology. Best estimate I've read is that it saves low single-digit gallons of fuel per year.Again, NO one wants them and we shouldnt be forced to have our starters wear out due to Govt Mandates about Corp. MPG avgs
Ill be sitting there at a light and you just hear the cars restarting around me, I cant help but smh and laugh at themNailed it. No one was asking for this technology. Best estimate I've read is that it saves low single-digit gallons of fuel per year.
I gave it a chance in my Bronco but was done after one fuck up. Imagine your vehicle not being able to restart in an intersection? High price to pay for a virtue signal...
The simplest explanation is usually the right one.Personally not a fan and always disable mine first thing. Don’t believe that manufacturers have “beefed-up” internal engine components/starters/batteries just to accommodate ASS.
You DO realize that lifting your foot a fraction starts your car so that in the instance that you are trying to get through opposing traffic, your engine is running.I guess you have never needed to turn left in an intersection while waiting for a gap in opposing traffic? Sometimes you need that power on demand and not have to wait for the engine to restart. It also turns my Bronco off as I come to a stop for parking, then turns on so I can shift into park, then I get to shut it down again with the push of a button. Seeing that I tend to come to a full stop and park at the end of every vehicle voyage, it means I would get the privilege of that frustration at least once every drive.
Honestly, I just like having more control of the vehicle. I turned mine off the moment FORSCAN supported it.
Being a weirdo and crackhead, and knowing the carbon that is dumped into our atmosphere as I sit in bumper to bumper traffic daily, I don't mind you laughing at my vehicle restarting. I do feel sorry for you that you think enough about what my choices are that you need to laugh at them, but hey....you do you.Ill be sitting there at a light and you just hear the cars restarting around me, I cant help but smh and laugh at them
Really wish they gave us the option, as again, save a few weirdos and crackheads here, 99% of us would reject it
You are aware the planets going through Carbon Starvation, right? Since when did Planet Food turn into such an evil thing?Auto start/stop is more about reducing carbon output than MPG gains. Especially when driving in heavy stop and go traffic, the carbon reduction can be great.
So I agree it is annoying and if it wasn't so noticeable I would probably tolerate it , so also to consider is the auto transmission that I was not aware of and someone correct me if I am wrong is that an electric pump either comes on or is running all the time to maintain pressure to apply clutches to keep it locked in first gear as the engine turns the trans pump to pressurize the system. It makes sense , but have not heard of but one person mentioning this as part of the operation. Maybe these new trans have an electric pump as part of the normal operation.
I also watched a video saying that Toyota counts the number of start/stop operations and set an engine code when that set value is met and you are required to go to the dealership to replace starter even if it is working fine. They also have to reset the counter. True or not I would not be surprised if that is how it works.
