2.7L blown engine failure list . . 68 so far [Updated: December 13, 2022]

Original post 2/6/22: So mine died today at 6200 miles. Build date was 9/7, not sure of the motor info, will take a pic tomorrow.

Failure mode: 65 MPH getting ready to exit the highway. A minor surge, then the motor shut off. No loud noises or anything. No warning lights prior to the shut off. Coasted into a gas station. It will crank but not start. The coolant reservoir is empty, and it smoked like hell out the exhaust for 10 min after I parked it. Acts like a sudden head gasket failure.

Oil level was good, no foam or shiny bits on the dipstick. No puddles or external leakage from sitting overnight.

Update 1: 2/7/22: The dealer I bought it from informed me this morning (quite rudely) that it would be "late March" before we can look at it if you tow it here". That's going to be a conversation with the Manager later today.

Another local dealer had availability and will hopefully provide info on the initial diagnostic today. They've been great to communicate with so far, but since I didn't buy there I'm worried my priority will be lower to them.

The pic below is with it not running, just post failure. It look like it sent the coolant into the exhaust and this is it flashing off.

Sheesh. Same built date and same engine serial as me. I'm at 4400 miles, was hoping I'd be out of the woods soon but I guess 10k is the new milestone to reach.

Unfortunately, we don't know if there is a safety milestone. We only have one 2.7L forum member above 10K miles right now.

The median B6G mileage is only 2K at the moment.

you can be 'hopeful' then - but nirvana only comes after 50K & trade-in.

I too have a mid November engine and I hope we are out of the woods. I would feel better knowing there are 21319’s out there with 5,000 to 10,000 miles now.

Comments like this are counterproductive...and here is why:

The "N" in NHTSA stands for national...as in the entire US nation. Within this nation a very wide variety of vehicles from many manufacturers are sold and operated on US highways. Manufacturers like Hyundai/Kia, General Motors, Mini(BMW) etc. IF EVERY FORD BRONCO PRODUCED TO DATE were reported to NHTSA as having an engine failure it likely wouldn't equal the number of reports NHTSA has received just about those couple of manufacturers I mentioned in the past couple years or so. Consider the scale. Yes in 2022 vehicles DO STILL IN FACT break down...guys like me still have a job. I'm not saying these SHOULDN'T be reported to NHTSA...that is in fact within NHTSA's purview. But this notion of 50-100 failures being reported to NHTSA having a huge impact is laughable. NHTSA has MUCH bigger fish to fry.

Now, on the other hand...the Bronco is a vehicle marketed to the hardcore enthusiast...consider it a Ford "pride" model. Ford may be convinced to do the right thing because it would generate positive spin. Ford fixes the problem and moves on w/out any pressure from government agencies, purely based on customer feedback, and purely for customer satisfaction. That would be a "marketing" win, coming out of a pr problem. That's likely the angle Ford takes, and the only one that makes any economic sense.

Getting the government involved with the information we have does seem premature but NHTSA is currently investigating 600k Dodge trucks after 31 complaints of stalling so maybe 33 failures out of a much smaller pool would be noteworthy to them?

Keep a sharp eye on fluid levels. I had no indications of pending failure, but you may catch something. It’s terrible to not trust your new ride.

How does anyone not worry about this?!

I seriously get anxious when I come to stop light and am not in the outside lane thinking I'll need to push it across all lanes with your typical a-hole honking and hollering. Won't drive it when I HAVE to be some place that I can't afford to miss. My daughter loves driving it and it makes me nervous every time she takes it out. She has no experience with roadside breakdowns of this type. Not a flat tire scenario where you just drive it carefully to a safe location.

It is a real fun sucker at this point as we are getting ready to roll into spring. Now one with over 6K miles? So much for being out of the failure window.

I worry about it the same way I worry about a mag 9 earthquake in the Cascadia subduction zone. It’s not a constant, every moment of every drive worry, but it would suck if it happened.

Sadly, your engine code is in the danger zone. 1700 miles I think was your last update. My engine code is ouside the known EBD’s yet I have an emergency kit in my Bronco. Including the warmest down parka I have. Having an emergency kit will reduce anxiety, as well as checking the Broncos fluid levels. But Ford has to act now!

I hope Ford steps up before you have an EBD.

Two days ago I noticed a burning smell while driving. Kind of smells like bbq or wood burning inside the cabin. I have had my bronco 3 wks (after being stuck in production for 3 months), it’s has a little over 700 miles on it. Unfortunately I looked up my engine and it falls within the dates you have listed. Calling the service department tomorrow to hopefully figure out what’s going on. Anyone else smell a burning while driving before the engine failures? It’s not constant, it comes and goes but it is very noticeable.

I've had an occasional burning rubber smell I have yet to track down. I'm thinking it is the tires, which my BFGs on my F250 stink sometimes or near the rear exhaust. The smell is more apparent in the rear.
