California and it's no contest. Complain all you want but you can literally be a couple hours from skiing to surfing. We have King of the Hammer and Rubicon.

If you think you can't afford it the pay is way better. Most the union labor guys I deal with came for a job and stayed.
I am in California. I am never leaving. Great weather, great natural resources and great off roading. Lots of BLM land. Yes some things are more expensive...but I agree, lots of jobs pay more here. A neighbor moved to Mississippi a few years back...he took a 50% haircut in pay (skilled tradesman). He was visiting a year or so ago...he kinda regrets the move...

The grass is not always greener.

When people complain, you have to figure out their perceptive.

this page should have had a poll. 5 pages and counting within a day to basically repeat the same thing over and over (preaching while I add one more to the thread 😄)
but you read it all. Lol 😝
(added another)

I left the question very vague on purpose.
I’m genially curious to read people’s insight. Biased, snarky, or otherwise.

interestingly, I think we’re finding the ”off-road lifestyle“ isn’t as accessible for some as it is to others.

Born in America Fork Utah and love going back to visit. I hope to buy a vacation home close to Moab one day and spend my retirement years exploring the hundreds/thousands of miles of trails around the area. But love it here in Alabama - cheap cost of living and low taxes and the fishing is excellent. Here's a pic off my back porch...

Sweet Home Alabama! 🥰

As much as I love home, not sure I”ll retire there. By looks of your pic, I’d say somewhere in the Northern part of the state, but really can’t tell.

I like Appalachia for the same reasons; reasonably low cost of living, good climate, good fishing, hunting, hiking, wheeling.

I drink bourbon a lot, beer, often, and enjoy sitting outside with my fire pit, so when I retire, I plan to look at trees, go wheeling, fish, hunt, sit by a fire outdoors, and drank my bourbon until I one day pass away.

Alabama has surprisingly excellent healthcare in the Huntsville area and Birmingham especially with UAB. NC with research triangle has about the same. Virginia is good for all that we’re discussing as well.

Best thing about the South is us Southerners. Good folk and good times.

I could feel it around the time I hit Kentucky. I'm 100% moving somewhere in the south.

Is Canada a state? If so, that's my vote.

An early Christmas gift... How nice of you! You will be missed.
Don't worry, they still have internet there. I think.

What’s the real deal with CA?
Nobody can dispute CA has beautiful scenery, diverse climates and great off-roading.

It’s the “live” part that I just can’t wrap my head around.

Even if you get away from the high-crime/insane traffic population centers like LA and San Fran…you can’t escape the high taxes. Weird motor vehicle laws. And even weirder gun laws. (to name but a few)

Most CA folk are no different than me or any of my friends here. There’s not a damn thing wrong with 90% of that state. But that 10% really screws up the entire state.

I didn't read all 5 pages but the fact that Colorado was hardly mentioned at all on the first page has me questioning all of your off-road credentials. 🤣
I mentioned it on the first page….I sad any of the 4 corners states.

NM, CO, AZ, and UT are where it's at. Sure, you can go to an off-road park in the East just to put mud on the doors, but out here we usually wheel with a destination in mind. It means more when you make it to the spot you're aiming for, and the view is ALWAYS worth it.

I agree. I tow my trail rig all over the US and I prefer the trails out west. There are good places to wheel here, but I try to avoid mud which is hard to do in the south.

Washington and Idaho have a ton of forest service roads.
I was wondering when PNW would get some love. Snow wheeling, Elbe Hills, Walker Valley, Moses Lake sand, and that crazy rock ravine in eastern WA that almost ruined @Tricky Dick 's rig. Also, has Oregon really not been mentioned? Lots of rock and sand off-roading there, including beach running. Politics too extreme?

Been to you neck of the woods many times for work, GA Bama, usually a week at a time and I couldn't handle August. The humidity killed me. We went to the company softball game after work and 94 degrees, and long sleeves due to the bugs, I'm not built for that.

I'm sure growing up in that climate would be different, but as they say... "At least it's a dry heat in the desert".
Nope. Arkansas born and I'm about over it. They're predicting 125 degree heat indices in the mid-south in the next 30 years. No thanks. I'll wave at Tricky on his way south next year as taking a U-haul to an island in the Salish sea sounds pretty nice after the summer we just had, which started in May this year and didn't buzz off until almost October, with about 30 days of actual triple-digit temps o_O

The NWA crowd will probably be cross with me for mentioning it, but if you can stand the heat, NW Arkansas is within a few hours of Hot Springs, Disney, SMORR, and probably other smaller off-road parks. There's also the Ozark NF and NWA stays in the top 3 places to live so there's that.
