Because Ford tried this once and it didn't go so well, which is why I posted the flaming Pinto a few posts back ...
Seriously though, my CJs and TJ have rear mounted fuel tanks. So many of those have been and still are on the road. Not aware of a significant fire risk, leastways it's very low on my list of concerns. I bet a rear mounted modern Bronco tank with decent skid plate would be safe.
