Hello, just picked up my 2.7l and it seems like it really likes to run hot. 200 miles on the odometer, 75*f outside, at 6000' elevation, driving around town 35-45 surface roads and the engine oil is at 215 and the trans is at 210.
Is that normal?
This isnt sitting in traffic, but driving down the street.

My 03 Yukon typically runs around 185 trans temp. When towing the trans has gotten up to 220 pulling 5000lbs up I70.

Thanks

One big thing to note is during the first 500 miles or so the temps run hot, they will simmer down after break in period. I freaked out the first few hundred to because it was cool Oct/Nov and noted similar temps as OP did just cruising around lightly.

That said 10 speed's operating temperature is 206 - 215. These bitches run hot, cause hotter equals better emissions.

Yeah - modern engines like it hotter due to emissions. I've seen the Bronco oil temp hit 215 when into the turbos pulling up a hill.

My old 6.7 F-350 would hit 255-260 tugging a 15k trailer up the hill from Payson to Heber (and ramming 30+ PSI down it's throat). Of course that was part of my Redneck Tuneup - put the pedal to the floor up that entire hill to really clean it all out!

Modern oils are generally good to at least 250 degrees for conventional and higher for synthetics. I would not worry about the temp as long as it's not in the red range and below 250. I'd think you'd really have to run the piss out of the Bronco to get it up past 225. Not sure about the 2.7, but the Ford Deisels de-rate if temps get too high in order to protect themselves. I'd suspect there is some programming in the 2.7 to do the same.

Trans will run hot until the gears de-green as well. Will cool off a bit after you get some more mileage.

I typically see engine oil temps of 200° around town but see readings in the lower 220's heading over the mountains.

Thanks everyone. Will stop sweating it until I finish the break in period.

I went to Leadville last weekend and heading up I-70 the Bronco did great. Had no problem keeping the speed limit at about 9 psi boost. I would agree with postponing those 6% grades until your engine gets to know itself. I never thought to monitor the trans temp.

I just towed this Retro 195 from Indiana to Oregon and those were about my temps also. And I was pulling about 4500 LBS. The outside temperature was around the same but got up into the 80’s in some states. Although the oil temperature did climb up to around 220-240 when climbing some bigger grades. But all and all the my Billy Bronco is a beast…

FWIW driving around today, 84*f outside. Oil got up to 230 and trans 221. So just curious I pulled over and sure enough the radiator shutters or what ever they are called are closed. Checked a couple more times through out the day and they are always closed. This doesnt seem like a good thing to me. What exactly does normal operation look like with these?

65 here today. Stayed low 190’s for both running 85 on the Highway. Shot up to 203 for oil when I was doing some data logging pulls then settled back at 193. Trans stayed in the 190’s.

The other weekend when we hit 85, oil and trans were low 200’s That’s on a 35 mph stretch with some lights.
