Right? Realistically that’s probably EOL for the whole rig anyway and it’s in the friggin manual for cripes sake! Truly an auto-“magic” transmission!

I'm going to do my transmission and transfer case at 30k...I change oil every 5k and rotate the tires. I did get the extended warranty (150k or 10years) so I'm going to take it to the dealer for changes so there is no dispute over negligence. Just a thought...

I will be interested if you will share what they quote you. It was $700+ at my dealership for the 7speed (not automatic).

WOW...I have done full restores on four cars...the last was my 85 four Runner which I loved...if they tell me $700 to change fluids I'll shit and tell them to piss off...even at 69 years old I can pretty much do anything....especially if they are charging like that!!! I'll let you know...thanks for the heads up!!!...Amos

I just did the full round underneath, I splurged on good fluids and it ran me about $125 for everything. Took about 2 hours total. The hardest thing was the rear diff just because it doesn't have a dedicated drain plug - and I wouldn't call that hard by any means. Changing the engine oil is more involved than changing any of these.

That said - I can certainly understand not wanting to get up underneath there and paying someone else, so don't take that as me judging you - I am most certainly not. $700 is criminal.

We're talking more specifically about the transmission fluid, not transfer case. It's a bit more involved since you have to drop the pan

Ah you may be right. I was thinking 7MT, haven’t touched the auto. Didn’t realize the difference

You got ripped off, $700 for a manual. Its simpler than an oil change. I did it myself in less than an hour. Sorry to hear a dealer will take advantage of someone like this. Just say in, Buyer Beware.

Where are you seeing a 30K transmission fluid change interval? My manual shows 150K for that service (pg 464), that may be a bit extreme but curious why 30K?

I absolutely will be changing my 10R60s fluid (with Amsoil) and filter every 50,000 miles.
I will install a deep pan (PPE?) at the first service.

I mean I have a 2004 ranger that has never had any fluids changed besides the oil. 215k miles trans is acting up a little but at this point can I really blame it on the fluid or how hard I have driven it in the 16 years I've owned it? Just like everyone wants to change their oil at 1000 miles. I went 5k miles then changed the oil in my brand new bronco. If the engine blows at 150k miles can you really blame it on going 5k miles on the first oil change? To each their own.

I'm with you. I do look at transmission fluid once in a while for discoloration or smell, but pretty much let things ride. I'm old, have had a lot of vehicles and have not had a failure of a lubricated component on any that I purchased with less than 100K on them already. Like you say, to each their own. I kinda feel the same about oil analysis, suppose you see a little chromium in the oil at 50K, you going to tear the engine down, or just wait until it causes an issue like anyone else?
