MPG-what am I doing wrong?

2024 OBX non SAS. 3.73 ratio.

Swapped tires to 285/70R17 Falken Rubitrek on OEM 17” steel.
629 rev 18 OEM off and 632 rev 17’s on.
As close as I could get to 629 trying to keep speedo within 1 mph.

550 miles ..15.8mpg max via
highway with cruise set.
15.4 around town.
Tires dropping mpg down?

Was hoping for 17mpg minimum if
not 19-20. Specific break in period?

I have a 2 door Badlands with sasquatch and 2.7 auto and in the economy mode around town (when I don't kick in the turbos) I consistently get 19mpg...if I hammer the turbos it drops down pretty quick. The lowest I've had was 17mpg

What speed are you setting on the cruise control? That makes a huge difference. I set mine at 70 (72 max. ). Anything above that and I can watch the mpg dropping. I get over 20mpg highway with Sasquatch. With my mix of driving, Im getting 18.5 avg. at this point (4-door, 2.7, sasquatch, bash plates, mod bumper). I use standard mode.

2023 OBX 2.7 w 4.27 gears, just over 5K miles averaging 17.5mpg. I always drive in ECO mode unless I need more power or traction. Best I’ve seen on the freeway was a 400 mile trip to SoCal from SF Bay and saw 22mpg round trip. I usually try to keep RPMs at or below 2K. All mpg ratings from the onboard computers.

People reporting low to mid 20's mpg are usually driving medium speed roads say about 40 to 60 mph with almost no stops and very light on the gas - for examples see posts here - 22.5 mpg - 25.3

Very true. I topped out at 25.0 MPG doing exactly that. My normal driving in all conditions is in the 17s. 4door Sasquatch auto 2.7

What was the MPG with the old tires? Are you reading the MPG from the dash, or doing the calc yourself? Lots of threads here on the subject for reference. …and it’s shaped like a brick, so it’s best to keep your expectations very low.

My Bronco is shaped the same as all the others, I always get 21 or better MPG in 100% city driving and 22-25 on the highway. One time I got 32 MPG on a 50 mile round trip highway (it was calm and I was driving for mileage that day). The Bronco is not a vehicle for mileage for sure, but I'm getting the same mileage my sister gets with her Honda CRV, which is pretty darn good. But yeah I wouldn't want to get 15 MPG. One thing is for sure, if you always puch it or drive fast your mileage is going to suck.

I have the same. 2023 OBX Non-Sas with the 3.73 rear. Put on BFG AT KO2's 275/70/18 using the OEM rims.

I range on average with 11.2 litres/100 km (21 mpg) in town and 10.3 litres/100 km (23 mpg) on the highway. The KO2's are a heavy 10 ply E rated tire at 57.7 pounds and 627 revs/mile.

Not sure what would account for such a difference. Maybe driving style? Not sure.

Question, did you balance and do an alignment when you swapped tires ? Could that be the reason for a decrease in MPG?

First of all, the computer has to "learn" your driving style. Also you have to allow your gas tank to get to at least 1/4 tank, keeping your tank full or mostly full hurts your gas millage, gas is heavy. Keep your foot off the floor that goes without saying. Don't carry a lot of stuff that you don't need.

My first tank on my 2024 OB 2.3L was 15 or so MPG. By the 3rd tank I was showing 24 on the computer. I took a 5 hr trip with speeds to 80 MPH and the computer showed 19 MPG.
I only have slightly more than 1000 miles on the odometer so it's still breaking in.

If your new tires are significantly heavier, that will also drop your mileage noticeably. Any unsprung weight kills performance. If they’re not heavier and they are basically the same diameter then it’s just driving style. To get good mileage you need to stay at or below the speed limit, Feather the throttle to get up to speed, and get off the throttle early and coast to stops as far as possible. My goal is to never use my brakes. I realize that’s not possible but that is always my goal when I’m trying to get good gas mileage.

the question is, how fast are you going. 75-80? My bronco HATES going that fast 15-17. 55-65 i can get 20 on the computer

also depends on the wind. if you've got a crazy side or head wind you'll get far worse MPG

Sounds about right. I get about 24, and most of my driving is on major (section line) roads. Speeds are generally 50-55 mph and lights are supposed to be limited to every 1/2 mile.

When I get on the freeway I take a 2-3 mpg hit, because the Bronco is a brick.

For the OP's driving environment, he will get better MPG if he uses Sport mode. He has an automatic (OBX) and sport keeps gears longer, resulting in less boost in intermediate traffic.

What speed is "highway"? Anything over like 55 and it's going to start dropping hard.

OP is in California. Cali has a rather low speed limit of 70. Traffic tends to move at about 75ish.

In AZ, we are posted 75, and anything under 85 will get you a horn, the middle finger, and an extra helping of road rage.

Basically in order of contribution to mpg:
1. Driver style (heavy foot or light) (biggest impact)
2. City or highway (stop/ go, do you allow the engine to shut off?)
3. Tire diameter (up to 33") (>33">35") (>35") (rolling resistance, unsprung weight)
4. Accessories -- light bars etc. (towing) (Aerodynamics)
5. Speed (<55), (<65), (<75)( > 75). (Affecting Aerodynamics)
5. Maintenance (change your engine air filter)
6. GOAT Mode (Sport / not sport)
7. Vehicle weight.

2.3L Base 3.73 gear. 36k miles.
21 city, 24 highway.

I try to take back roads that are 55 mph as opposed to freeway when I can. 55 mph seems like the sweet spot for fuel economy.
Oh and if I find a large vehicle to block the wind for me I do a lot better on MPG, but windshield suffers.
