New to off-roading with my 2023 SAS Big Bend. Looking at my Christmas list and beyond. What would you say are the:

Minimum must have’s for gear offroad?
Like to have’s?
Love to have, but can do without?
Name your top 3 to get me started!

when I went to off rodeo - the guides there said

Shovel - can get you unstuck 90% of the time
Water - so you don’t die
Towel - because hitchhikers guide is never wrong

Since you sound like you have never off roaded the answer is "none". Go out with friend or a local club, see if you even like it and then decide what you need. I personally never use the Bronco for off roading as the sole purpose, but as a means to getting to more out of the way places. Thus my gear needs are very different from someone who wheels it.

In the mean time focus on bling - script emblems, extra lighting, paint stripes, etc. and address some of the obvious idiocies - like atrocious interior lighting, lack of proper grab handles..

You can have all the appropriate gear, but if you don't know how to properly use it, it's useless.

I'm no off-road expert, however I do spend a fair amount of time watching various YouTube videos on it - Including recovery. Thankfully we have a pretty big off-roading club in my area, which does monthly free off-road trips to show newbies the basics of off-roading, as well as recovery. You should see if something like this exists in your area. They will likely provide some insights on basics you should have, as well as how to use the items properly and safely.

We just outfitted 2 Bronco's for off roading and overlanding, the list is so very long, we are over 20k in on camping gear, tents, racks, fridge, shelves, molle panels, awnings, roto pax, kitchen drawers, new floors, slide out and seat delete for the 2 door, recovery gear, winch, off road lighting, etc. If I were you, find some people that have some knowledge and go with them, recovery gear, ice chest, water, are the most important. You can always start off with a ground tent for camping, so much cheaper. If you just do day trips it is way cheaper. We still need lifts and bigger tires, plus some suspension upgrades, I am saving for those. Hopefully this summer we will get that done.

shovel (mostly for #2) & compostable TP
air compressor

but as stated, the best thing is a buddy/group/club

I won't pick three, these are all required IMO:
Shovel, an "e-tool" aka compact shovel works
recovery strap
soft shackles
tie rod kit
bottle jack
basic tools like adjustable wrenches and lug nut tool (breaker bar with socket works)
air compressor
food/ water/ blanket

optional: recovery boards

While food & water are important, those are not gear you buy for wheeling, those are things you pack for... well, every long trip. Like Boyan said, different wheeling has different needs and Aonarch said, there are more than 3 things needed to go out.

But the question is three things to buy and I'll assume tools maybe something already had and another item to pack.

-Air compressor for airing up and repairs, I would add a tire repair kit too say if out alone, but if in a group and carrying a spare, not a immediate need.

-Shovel, for digging out and #2. Note: along with TP, a fluid recovery kit should be packed too.

the third I'll say will depend on what you're doing, overlanding v. crawling v. group on FSR, recovery gear, straps & shackles are probably next, but if in a group on a FSR are those that important? But if you're alone overlanding, your recovery may depend on you, than recovery boards may be #3, to go with that winch you should have, if far out and alone.

Where are you going and with whom?

I start out in 1st gear almost all the time, but run through all 10 on any given day.
