Anyone run the 0w30 oil instead of 5w30? While it only gets down to around 0°F here, it tend to jump in a immediately drive it since there isn't a remote starter available for it yet. Figured 0w30 would be better for this situation, and I imagine it would help fuel economy a tad bit.

I know it's trivial overall, just curious if anyone else uses it.

When launching from home base my cold weather starts using a block heater/timer arrangement keep things ideal.
The jump in and go factor is lost with disconnecting and stowing away the cord. However the BIG advantage is the no wait time for heat to show up.
Honestly, I never knew such a thing as 0W30 existed.

Shouldn't have any effect on fuel economy. It's advantage is it acts like 0 weight in the cold and gets flowing faster for that added cold start protection (when the temps are legit cold). After it gains some warmth, which it should only take a couple minutes, it behaves like 30 weight.

There really is no downside to 0-30, pumps like a 0 weight when cold, has film strength of a 30 wt when warm.

EXCEPT - for its impact on possible warranty claims. Unless I had it in writing from Ford or a dealer that using 0-30 was ok, I'd only use what is specified in the manual.

Just keep that jewel in the heated garage! I have a outdoor wood boiler that keeps all my toys at 65 degrees all winter long. Can't imagine getting into a cold vehicle. Michigan

Just loaded up some Pennzoil Platinum Euro LX 0w-30 up with an OEM filter. We’ve had our first few nights of -35°c, swapping it out from Pennz. Plat. 5w30 ~10,000kmsOCI

Once an engine can have (by its manufacture specs) 0W30 I can not see why even 5W30 is recommended other than for marketing purposes. And we all know that the most critical part of an engine's life is the cold start phase, don't we? So why not go 'thinner' with an oil which has a wider temperature span to begin with?

The 0W at start up is always better than 5W - and when at operational temp a 30 oil is a 30 oil.
Coming back to Florida from a brief Montana trip I decided to stay with 0W30 year around for my Wildtrak. (yes, and with 7 qts every 4-5k mls.... :).... )

When I do my first oil change I’m likely putting in 0w30 because why not? Looks like the same hot temp range but lower cold in the manual? I already run 0w30 in other vehicles so it’s already on my shelf.

I did the 0w30 for my first oil change. It was like $20/quart. Last time I'll do that.

I would note most 0w30 oils are euro spec. If you’re trying to keep your warranty intact you will have to search for a 0w30 that meets the ford spec (Basically API SP). Mobil 1 AFE is the only one that comes to mind.

I'm not Bob so I'm not an expert. But one thing to keep in mind is that a 0-30 a 5-30 are usually not as identical as you think. Now I haven't looked up and compared every single brand, But remember each of these oils ranges within those weights. So at your engines operating temperature, those oils could have different viscosities.

Unfortunately in the specs of most oils, the only one listed is the viscosity at a 100° c (212° f). If you look at those two numbers on your two versions, are they the same? To our engines run at 100° c?

Another thing you need to make sure of, it's just the slight difference in oil can put it outside of the engine specs per Ford.

For example Pennzoil premium meets the specs, but Pennzoil ultra does not and will not.

Amsoil 0w30 is actually a tad thicker at 212F degrees than it’s 5w30 while also remaining thinner when cold. It’s actually thicker at operating temp than their 10w30 which is why I run their 0w30 in my older stuff with great results.

The above mentioned oil from Walmart is exactly what I have in mind and it meets WSS-M2C963-A1. Not bad for $5/qt; one would think.
