Locking axles recommendations?

Fyi the inner axles are different between m220 and M220 with a factory locker. You will need to figure out which ones work for the truetrack or what ever other locker you would like to purchase.

Lot more to this swap then people seem to think.

Not very - yes there is a part that exists but if you do not have the factory ELD the ring gear is welded so you have to replace all of the internals. By the time you do that, you’ve pretty much just paid for the entire Ford Performance rear end.

But if you want to maintain the 373 gear you use the true track and the Jeep JL ring and pinion up the true track is $760 and you can get a Spicer ring and pinion for 299 and if you're capable of installing it you'll save a lot of money

I'm kind of shocked this exists - but there it is.

It is pricey, but it is the simplist bolt-on when transitioning from non-ELD. You won’t need to do the front until you are ready.

saying that, the cost is going set you back ~$9,000.00 with labor and taxes. But what you get is a very solid and rugged rear axle that can be regeared in the future.

Just the parts is going to be $7,600.00, if you have the space, time, knowledge and tools this is a very doable DIY project. Saving the $1,400.00 in labor is attractive for a person on a retired budget.

the whole UD60 kit reuses all of the OEM break components and has a new track bar. A new driveshaft is required, which my parts quote of $7,600.00 included.

the final piece I want to solve before I squeeze blood out of stone and piss the wife off is the ELD switch. I really want get the OEM switch module, but no one has yet figured out what has to be done to make it work.

I don’t have the wiring diagram and cable drawings, but I think by replacing the cable harness part #MB3Z2C011BA, the switch module (aka hero switches) part #M2DZ-13D730-GA, then do some forescan changes. Again I don’t know if this will work…. Time will tell

Did I miss where you confirmed you have 3.73 gears? I've forgotten all the build details across all the models. Sounds about right though.

If you try to stick with factory/Ford Perf parts, you will need to regear the front to match as well because I don't believe a factory 3.73 locked rear axle exists.
(Ranger maybe???)
(I'll go out on a limb here and throw out the Dana 3.73 $7000 axle + install idea)


Easiest and cheap:

• recovery gear and onboard air - great idea no matter what axles you have.
• aftermarket diff and new 3.73 gears, several brands to choose from.
• winch- instead of going down the locker rabbit hole, but that gets close to a new rear end cost as well.
• Trade for a better equipped Bronco

I'd consider looking for a matched used set-up from somebody's build out.
Like a Badlands 4.46 front and rear set up and then use the Ford Perf switches or upfitters if you have them.
If you have to go through the trouble of swapping out the M190 FDU for gears, might as well swap in a good unit (M210 locked).

I'd love the hero switch option as well. Hopefully in aftermarket form so you can wire around all the digital nannies they built in.
I've never really looked into it to see if anybody has done this.

Front locker came with the 4 Auto transmission which is a different module than the Part time Transfer case. Highly doubtful that we get full integration without access to reprogramming modules.

Still need to figure out which stock axle shafts work with which lockers. So little information since factory crate axles are so cheap.

I have my m220 axles.out (e locker ones) I can measure the lengths...I'll let both axles go with the locker for a good deal...

Have you considered eating a little $$$ on a trade-in and swapping up to what you actually want with full factory integration? Might end up close enough of a loss to make the numbers come out in the wash.. If it were mine it would be worth exploring at least

Yeah, I forgot to detail that findings were centered on the Dana UD60.

as far as @Snacktime response, I will publicly apologize, but I still found it too brief for me as I am still getting my head around all the details and options, I should have just let his response stand.

that and the non locking gears the ring gear is welded on. So you have to buy a new gearset anyway.

So you're saying there is a possibility of adding a locker might need to change the axles as well because they are different lengths or just need to really pay attention to everything lol.

More the pay attention to everything.

It's true the axles are different lengths if you have the standard rear end vs the ELD rear end. The pumpkin rides 1" different between the two - why, I don't know. I have one of each and took the measurements in another post somewhere.

Also, if you have the standard rear end, your ring gear is welded to the carrier, so you have to replace that.

So, just using TruLock as an example - if you used the standard rear end, you could reuse the same axles. And the TruLock for the '21 Bronco does have the correct spline count (32). But you need a new ring gear. The TruLock replaces the carrier. You'd need new carrier bearings and you'd have to re-shim the carrier and pinion because of different clearances.

So it's more than just bolt it on, and while it ~can~ be done under the shade tree, it's not what I would call easy, there's some specialty tools involved, and it's much better done at a re-gear shop.
