Hello! My store recently replaced a MIC 1.0 top for one of our customers, and part of the replacement process required us to cut up the old top panels. Would anyone be interested in seeing the inside of the MIC top?

Edit: Below are some pictures that I took of the MIC 1.0. After inspecting the top and seeing just how thin that outer shell is, I can see why the honeycomb structure of the top was showing through when exposed to extreme heat/moisture.

Why the fuck would they make a top out of cardboard couldn’t they just use like all plastic or even fiberglass
Cost cutting, Bronco21fan, cost cutting. Recycled cardboard goes dirt cheap from the local recycling center.

…this is pretty much par for the course on composites.

maybe don’t research how composite aircraft components are made…

If you zoom in and look carefully you can see how the cardboard is infused with a protective resin of some type. This at least validates it is not plain raw soggy cardboard and will at least handle some amount of humidity.

This has nothing to do with the raw unfinished edges that WILL separate/delaminate from water and freezing.

You can see that they are using a 'Foaming' adhesive that could very well have sealed the edges if they would have run the bond line out a bit further.

Yeah.....Leer, SnugTop and more......make nice tops, low weight and very sturdy. Too bad they did not go with material like they use.

so, if you're looking for someplace to dump a scrapped top or two that have been cut from side to side so the latch points are still intact... I might know somebody

Basically, cost....
I spent some time in the aircraft building industry... If I remember, I think we called it flexcore...?
This stuff is designed for straight, even width panels, like floor boards.
Ford probably uses cardboard because of the contour width differences in the cross section. And it probably doesn't give up much if any strength to the aluminum core. The cardboard would be much heavier though.

OP,
Have you tried any paint experiments on the outside to see what works?

@aj_benedetto can you post the dealer/store directions on what you must do when changing a MIC 1.0 to a 2.0 please? Would love to see the guidance/directions. Ie, must you cut the top? Does the owner of a MIC 1.0 HAVE TO turn in their old top?

Need a 2.0 cut open. Anyone want to volunteer theirs? :D
I may be able to provide this sooner or later.... My 2.0 top is being replaced under warranty so maybe they will let me cut the bad one open. Problem is there is no ETA for getting my replacement top

So where is a Wrangler top cut image so we can compare.

I think the MOD top is supppsed to be made similar to the Jeep Tops. This MIC was a cost cutting band aid that bit Ford (and us) in the ass.
