Seems like a weird fix to me or a Band-Aid and curious if over time they will now fail due to heat buildup. There is a reason alternators are not sealed units. The true fix is to move it above the water line. We will see in areas like AZ and So Cal where Deep mud is not an issue but heat is.

How hard is this to install? Tight area no?
The alternator removal and installation procedure will differ based on the engine. It's a tight fit, especially in the 2.7L engine bay, but it can be done in ~1.5 hours on a service lift. WSM procedures for the 21MY are attached below. (I only have the 21MY WSM, so I don't have the procedure for the 3.0L Raptor engine.)

It would be nice if you could remove and replace the shield without removing the alternator, but I'm not sure that is possible for at least one of the models.

That looks to me like this can be swapped out without removing the alternator on the 2.3L…

Well I didn't know it also affected the 2.3 Mine was built in January so I'll have to check it out.

Is there already a shield in place on the 2.3L and this is an upgrade? If not - is there hardware needed to install? From the looks of the service manual - this can be accessed and installed from under the vehicle without removing the battery?

Removal

NOTE:
Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.

  1. Disconnect the battery.
    Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect (414-01 Battery, Mounting and Cables, General Procedures).
  1. Remove the air cleaner.
    Refer to: Air Cleaner (303-12C Intake Air Distribution and Filtering - 3.0L EcoBoost (299kW/406PS) (DD), Removal and Installation).
  1. NOTICE: When installing the B+ terminal nut to the generator, finger-start the nut before tightening or component damage may occur.
    Disconnect the generator and position the cable aside.
    • Position the B+ wire protective cover aside.
    • Remove the nut.
      Torque: 155 lb.in (17.5 Nm)

  1. Remove the upper generator shield nut.
    Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)

    Refer to: Generator Drive Belt (303-05C) .
  1. Loosen the clamp and position aside the CAC outlet pipe.
    Torque: 44 lb.in (5 Nm)

  1. NOTICE: The turbocharger compressor vanes can be damaged by even the smallest particles. When removing any turbocharger or engine air intake system component, ensure that no debris enters the system. Failure to do so may result in damage to the turbocharger.
    1. Release the CAC outlet pipe by spreading the retainer ends outward.
    1. Position the retainer ends in the notches locking the retainer in the open position and remove the CAC outlet pipe.

  1. Remove the RH front wheel and tire assembly.

  1. Remove the pin-type retainers, the push pins and position the fender liner aside.

My 23 2.3L has a shield on it, but it isn't as angular and form fitting, and is more bulbous looking. I wonder what the difference is

The updated shield for both engines started to be incorporated from build date 11/15/22-present according to the parts catalog.
Does this mean some 2022's have the updated shield? My "build week" was 11/14/22 so I'm guessing I missed it.

I don’t know the 22 to 23 cut off. But I’m assuming it was started for the 23MY.
