I wonder if anyone is going to develop a liquid cooled alternator for our application. Some high end manufacturers use them. It would give you a sealed alternator.

Look at a diagram of the 4.0L engine found in Jeep Wranglers and Cherokees and see how low the alternators were. I've seen a few XJ's over the years with water at hood level that didn't kill their alternators.
I've killed an XJ alternator with mud. It can be done! Lol.

Not sure what was worse, Jeep people trying to figure out how an alternator works or the Bronco people complaining that Ford screwed up the design. And they are both wrong.
Was waiting for the anti-Jeep humor on that one. That said they don't seem to be getting to a conclusion anywhere. :D

This seems like a mid-cycle refresh item.

At least no one here has proposed filling the alternator with silicone to waterproof it. Yet.

The other comments here about the differences in water fording vs. sitting in mud are spot on. You have to keep the vehicle moving. If you are going to be playing in mud like this, prepare for part failures and accelerated wear on components. Hub bearings, axle seals, any lubricated joint (sealed or not), idler pulleys, and in the worst case, transmissions, t-case, diff gears, and anywhere else you are carrying fluids. Been there done that enough times I won't do it again unless it is absolutely necessary to get from point A to point B--and in that case have the anchor point and winch or a buddy with a strap ready to extract it as quickly as possible. Rule #1 if there is the possibility to get stuck, don't take it deeper than the hubs without a way to recover quickly.

A thread from almost 20 years ago? What's the point?
Alternators haven't changed much in the last 50 years. That thread just shows it's an issue even for jeepers....or realistically anyone driving through water

That's just shows a desperate attempt to compare the Bronco with a 20 years old Jeep. The alternator in the 2012 and up Wranglers is almost hitting the hood as it has been relocated exclusively for this model. Regardless of the problem being in other vehicles it should not be this way for a new vehicle designed to function off road. Whats next? The 1984 Mitsubishi Montero heads cracked so the 2.7L blowing up in the Bronco are OK... I don't get the need to justify that a design flaw is ok instead of making manufacturers responsible for their products...

Ford Bronco Alternator 100% destroyed from mudding 1657155098138

Who pissed in your cheerios this morning. I was focusing on the fact that alternators aren't waterproof but if you want a more recent example here you go.

Now go try some breathing exercises and relax

Could be heat related, not sure how close the 2.7 alternator is to exhaust/turbo. Take something hot and quenching it can seize a bearing.

Also these new alternators are high output compared to older alternators. Not as reliable due to amount of current, heat and create more drag.
