Or could be that the fluid is thicker when cold and doesn't flow as well. But I think it is probably a combination of the 2.Metal contracts when it’s cold and expands as it warms up. It seems as though cold temperatures contract a part/parts enough to cause a tolerance issue and initially expose the sound being heard. That’s my guess at least.
