Build Timeline

I ordered a 2022 Black Diamond with no add-ons, just a 7MT with the part-time 4x4 system.

Total Cost

The goal here is to keep track of the total cost to own excluding things like gas, car washes, etc. Those can be estimated with all the data here.

OOTD PriceModificationsOEM Parts SoldMaint./RepairsTotal Cost
41546.42*

1053.68
47,753.26
*Price after $1,600 MY 22.5 Price Protection (received 90 days after purchase, so still paid taxes on the increased price)

Modifications

This is a list of mods that I plan on doing over the course of 2 to 3 years (in order of installation date) and a way to track cost (excluding tools bought to help with the mods). Listed in the order of installation. My general inspiration is to make this a "baby" G-Wagon that is still capable off-road.

So, my focus at the beginning is on things that are either for convenience, quality improvement, or protection, e.g., sound deadening, PPF, towing, etc.

Then, I'll look into performance related mods, like slightly larger tires, engine tunes, etc.

And then lastly, I'll look into "luxurifying" modifications, such as leather interior, hard top modifications (or a completely new one) and things like that.

The estimated total cost of the things I plan on doing is ~$9k-12k. Some modifications will fall under general maintenance as I plan to replace them only when I absolutely need to (e.g., 285/70R17 tires when the current 265/70R17 set wear down). I also plan on buying most of these things when there are sales and using discount codes, Ford Pass, and credit card rewards point.

Mod: BroFlaps Non-Sas Front and Rear Mudflaps

Front Mudflaps w/ Ford Rock Rails:

Rear Mudflaps
:
Ford Bronco 2022 Black Diamond 2-Door 7MT IMG_5691
Ford Bronco 2022 Black Diamond 2-Door 7MT IMG_5692

Pros:
  • OEM look + less rigid design than similarly priced mudflaps on the market.
  • Front mudflaps were super easy to install.
  • Rear mudflaps were less easy to install, but still straightforward.
  • Included right-angle drill attachment and drill bit for rear mudflaps.
  • Option to purchase extenders.
  • Owners were easy to contact and quick to respond to any questions I had.
Cons:
  • Screws were silver. In the future, will have to paint them black so they blend in.

Thank you. The rear does make me nervous drilling into the bumper. I'm considering only the front.

Does it completely remove spray off the side or extenders needed for that ?

I saw a noticeable difference in spray and looking at the inside portion of the mudflaps, its obvious that they're working as intended. I think the extenders would be nice for bigger tires, but beyond that I'm not sure.

I don't really plan on going any bigger. Certainly not wider. Likely 255 80s one day.

I think that should be fine, but I guess it would also depend on the type of tire you replace it with. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but if it's a rock magnet like the Sasquatch tires are, then it might be worth purchasing the extenders after the fact.

I'm also sure if you message the owners on Etsy, they'd give you some solid advice.

It's really dumb how Ford left the rear defroster wires exposed. I saw some posts about them breaking off easily and wanted an inexpensive solution to prevent that from happening to me. I think they're worth it as I imagine that it would cost more and be more of a headache to fix these wires when/if they break.

You can't really see them from the rear-view mirror so you forget that they are there pretty quickly. If someone eventually comes along with a better looking option, I might consider getting that instead but this works well.

Mod: Zroadz Rock Slider Side Steps

Comparison to Ford Factory Rails:
Ford Bronco 2022 Black Diamond 2-Door 7MT IMG_5438

After Installation:

Ford Bronco 2022 Black Diamond 2-Door 7MT IMG_5585

I wanted to replace the Ford Factory Rock Rails with an actual step without losing the same level of functionality. I know these aren't technically rock sliders since they aren't frame mounted, but neither are the rails from Ford and these seem sturdy enough for my use. Plus they are made in the USA and they look the best out of all the options on the market, in my opinion.

Now, I originally ordered these in early November, but ran into a warranty issue when one of the studs on the driver's-side sidestep broke off while installing. I contacted Zroadz immediately afterwards, received a replacement step in early December, and sent the defective step back to them. Just be aware, Zroadz makes customers pay for shipping defective parts back to them, even with warranty claims. Their customer service can also be unresponsive at times.

But beyond that, the actual product itself is amazing and it's held up very nicely over the past 2 months.

Curious on your opinion on the door sill plates. Also - did you augment the sill protection with the Xpel film? It's not clear how it was used. Nice truck!

I like them mainly because they look cool against the eruption green paint. They were a bit tricky to get lined up and straight because I'm terrible at eyeing things like that, but I found this youtube video that gave a "measurable" way to do that. I'll post pictures of it soon.

They definitely do not do much in the way of protecting the door sill though, which is why I wanted to install the clear XPEL door sill guard. But, I ran out of sunlight that day and every day since has been pretty cold so I just haven't gotten around to doing it yet. Sorry for the confusion.
